PUBLIC NOTICE:
As you know Quinte Waste Solutions began as, and will continue to be, a Blue Box program. The advantages of having our collection crews complete a partial curbside sort via the blue box has enabled this area to have an above average recycling material capture rate. This also has allowed us to continue to use the smaller, less mechanized MRF and maintain a lower residual rate at that MRF.
Unfortunately there has been a noticeable increase in the number of residents using bags to set out recyclables, often mixed. We have attempted to accommodate this but the bags have to be opened and emptied on the sort lines at the MRF which causes slowdowns plus there is often garbage mixed in.
In order to regain our effectiveness and efficiency we will be reaffirming our blue box only philosophy at the curb; and after October 17, 2011 will no longer accept clear/clear blue (transparent) bags of recycling, except for clean shredded or non-shredded office paper.
The use of a grocery bag to set out newspaper and magazines as well as a grocery bag to set out other grocery bags is still an acceptable method to set out those two materials.
Over the next two months we will be communicating this message to residents throughout our service area, through local newspapers, radio, and online through our social networks.
We will also be targeting those residents currently using bags, by providing a leave behind in the form of a sticker that we will be affixing to blue boxes where bags are currently being collected up until October 17, 2011.
Please use approved blue boxes for your recycling and have them out to the roadside by 7:00am. Blue boxes can be purchased at the Tyendinaga Municipal Office at 859 Melrose Road for $6.00 each.
